Gear Focus: Double Down with the Double Ups

Multi-featured for multi-purpose is a hallmark of UST’s product design, and the Double Up Cup and Double Up Bowl are no exception, offering a two for the price (and pack room!) of one in each. As the name suggests, the cup and bowl are made of a hard, anodized aluminum outer shell, with a removable food-grade BPA-free silicone liner (including a thoughtful “lip guard”).

Don’t Use the Silicone Liner Over Direct Heat!

Although the silicone liner is advertised as heat tolerant to 300°F (149°C), never use it alone or inside the aluminum outer shell over direct heat. Heat your food/fluids in the aluminum shell only, a burning flame could easily exceed the silicone limits. I also tested the silicone liner alone to see if I could hold it tolerably with boiling water added, and it quickly became too hot to handle.

Best and safest use for this product is together with hot beverages or foods cooked elsewhere and added, or separately with the aluminum liners used for cooking and the silicone used as a carrying or serving dish/cup for not so hot contents (picture a soup in the metal bowl and salad in the silicone).

Is there anything better than camp coffee?

I have the UST Packit Stove in my kit, which fits the Double Up Bowl just fine, though the cup is too small. I tried stacking the cup inside the bowl and was able to get water pretty hot, though I wasn’t able to reach a boil (this may be poor fire making on my part.)

Both parts of the bowl and cup are dishwasher safe, making clean up after your hike or camping trip easy. And as with all UST products ... the price is right.

Power Banks

UST may not sell generators or full sized solar panels but we do have the technology to keep your electronics charged and your hands warm in the night. Water Containers

Anyone who has ever been in a major storm situation will know that water bottles magically disappear off shelves within minutes of a major storm announcement. Keeping a few water containers around house will ease some of the burden of trying to find water during a disaster. UST sells both a 10 liter and a 5 gallon size container that hold water safely for drinking, washing, and bathing. Depending on the quality of your tap water, you will have fresh water saved up straight from the faucet instead of fighting mobs in the stores.

Waterproof Containers

One of the greatest fears during storms is flooding, and some of your most precious items getting damaged in the waves flowing through our houses. Our waterproof containers may not save all your possessions during storms but it will keep some of them safe. The Watertight Case 2.0 will keep standard 4x6 photos snuggly secure and most can agree memories and photos are some of the most priceless items in your house. For larger items we have the Safe and Dry Bags. Keep important documents or essentials like food inside these bags. They were originally designed to keep food safely away from bears and keep items dry while kayaking. Even though not exactly a container, tarps can be spread over some items in your house to protect your possessions in the event a window breaks.

Manual Can Opener

From traditional to our multi-tool line, we’ve got plenty of items you can open a can with. Electric openers are useless when the power is out but you will need your canned food. During a storm, or power outages in general, it is advised to keep your fridge and freezer closed.  Cans, however, can live on the shelf for several years without refrigeration. Cans are also easy to store and come in a large variety from vegetables to complete meals.

Waterproof Matches

UST carries a variety of storm proof lighters and wind resistant fire starters but sometimes you just need a good old match. Matches are a good backup item to keep in the junk drawer of your home if you run out of butane or can't afford the sparks of our original fire starters indoors. However, better be safe and keep some matches just in case.

Cooking Supplies

Now that we have fire and an open can, we just need something to cook with. If you are able to find a spot outside, break out our gear while boiling water or warming up a can of soup. It isn't an emergency supply list without a First Aid Kit, some may actually say, it should come first on their list. Entertainment

Especially with children, this is an extremely scary and bewildering time and it is important to keep some distractions around the house that do not require electricity. Things will still be frightening and the winds will howl but family game night will do a lot to soothe the nerves.

Whistle / Signal Devices

Things will not always go so smoothly that you have to worry about being entertained. Whistles seem simple, and they are, but they increase your range of being noticed considerably. Lights serve well for this as well, keeping both will be ideal. Hopefully, you won't be in an extreme enough situation to use these items besides keeping the children amused. If you do not want to purchase these items separately, consider buying one of our survival kits. Multi Tool

Everyone should have an emergency kit where you keep your basic essentials in the midst of an emergency situation. A multi-tool is a great addition to a kit because it replaces a number of practical tools that could be needed during a storm. Campers and backpackers can get pretty attached to their favorite pieces of gear. There’s a bond that builds between the outdoor adventurer and the tools that serve them well, time after time. A few of my favorites have been rising to the top of my kit, to the point where I now take them everywhere. Having had the opportunity to take in a couple of cabin/cottage getaways recently this summer, I wanted to share with you my top four picks of my UST gear that come everywhere with me. These pieces are versatile and serve you just as well at home or in the cottage as they do in the backcountry.

1. Folder 3.5, Glo

I love this handy little blade. It has a nice weight and the fact that it’s a folder makes it easy and safe to toss in any of your overnight bags. The handle glows in the dark so you won’t lose it.

Use it for: Food prep, cutting open bags of firewood, cutting tinder and roasting sticks, carving your initials into a picnic table (so romantic).

2. Spright LED Lantern

The fun of expanding and contracting its accordion shade aside, the Spright has three light settings. It’s ON/OFF is a finger hold to protect against accidental battery wear. An additional handle on top allows for carrying or hanging, and it takes easily available AA batteries. Contracted, its puck-like shape and size is also an easy toss into any overnight bag.

As many times as I have needed a lighter, the TekFire has saved the day. Arguably my MOST favorite piece of kit, this lighter is fuel-free and charges with a USB cable. Never worry about a lighter running out of fuel again, just plug this hero in at night to light your way again tomorrow. 

Use it for: Candles, campfires. Because the arc needs to come in contact with the combustible, you lose some reach for applications like BBQs or gas stoves. Play it safe in these cases and use your TekFire to light a splint, then use the lit splint to reach the gas.

Activating Instructions

10 UST Items to keep in your vehicle

1. Lantern

It seems everytime something goes wrong it is in the middle of the night or it is storming. What is even more possible that it is a combination of the two. While on the side of the road having a lantern that can illuminate the areas the headlights cannot. Having a lantern such as the Brila Re-charge, that has a hook and a handle, is easy to set up when changing a tire or under the hood. It will also charge your phone.

2. Headlamp

Keep your mind bright with a headlamp. The Brila is great since it keeps your hands free while working but nothing beats the portability and the ease of a headlamp. The headlamp puts the light exactly where you need it and it is small and easy to transport in your vehicle and should be your first line of defense against the dark. When not on your head, easily tie it or hand it on different parts of the car for illumination.

3. Light / Fire Starter 

Who doesn't like fire? Especially if you are stranded in the wilderness and the heat not working in the car.  Having a fire starter or lighters are a pretty essential tools in any safety kit. 4. Basic Compass

Most of us have upgraded to a GPS for our everyday navigation but that doesn't mean we don't get lost or the GPS breaks. When traveling in the backcountry check with the Forest Service or other local organizations for the most updated information.

5. Towel

Towel is that soft multitool that comes in handy even in situations you never would place it. From putting pressure on an open wound to hitchhiking the possibilities of the towel are endless. 

6. Shovel 

Ever been stuck on a dirt road? Having a shovel in the vehicle especially, if you are going off the beaten path, will help you get out of sticky situations. Also, it is a great tool in those Leave No Trace moments. If you know you are going somewhere you are likely to have an misadventure, bring a buddy and the rest of your recovery kit.

7. Multi Tool

A bit of a catch all item but multi-tools will come in handy for small repairs. Having a whole tool set, especially between a multiple car household, can be hard to manage and can get expensive. They also take up a lot of space in your vehicle. Put one with your jumper cable and tire repair kit for easy storage. Having a tool that can do everything will make your life a lot easier. This is also a great stand it for a regular knife.

8. Survival Kit 

Our Survival Kits are meant for being carried in a backpack so you know it is easily stashed away. Even though it is a kit you never want to be in a situation where you have to use it, it comes with high quality items. 9. First Aid Kit
