Ten Things We Love About Fall
Though pumpkin spice permeates every food product from cookies to coffee starting the first week of September, there are plenty of other reasons to get excited about Autumn. The observances of Fall, with Jack-o'-lanterns and turkeys on the table, incite a certain affection for a connection with the outdoors. Though those days outdoors are growing shorter, they are full with discovery, beauty and adventure.
1: Cooler Days for Hiking
Fall hikes are refreshing, perhaps because you aren't instantly drenched in sweat one hundred feet from the trailhead. As a bonus, those of us that love wearing jackets and fleeces can rejoice in our autumn outdoor fashion choices. Be prepared though, as the mercury can dip at any moment and those golden leaves will be covered with snow.

2: Retreating Bugs
After a summer of treating mosquito bites and swatting away black flies, Autumn is a welcome respite from insects. Remember however, that adult ticks have a Fall feeding schedule and are active in temperatures above 40 degrees.

3: Pumpkins are Everywhere
There is something about those orange gourds in fields and doorsteps that scream that ambiance of Autumn. It's fun searching for that perfect pumpkin and then carving it into a spooky creation with the utilization of your knife skills.

4: Fall Foliage
A place you have hiked all year long, turns into a magical place as the leaves take on different hues and the landscape becomes a canopy of color. Take it all in, each day there is change and that is a great excuse for getting out and hiking more often.

5: Better Views
Don't despair if you missed "peak" leaf peeping season - the views can be outstanding on a leafless hike. You can see for miles now from previously obscured view summits, which is spectacular when framed by golden leaf litter in the valleys.

6: Campfires
Now that it isn't a sweltering ninety degrees in the evening, those campfires seem like a better idea. Whether to warm up from the chill, cook a meal upon or to stare into the flames until moonbeams illuminate the landscape.

7: Chilly Nights
With those cooler days, the nights can be downright chilly. Though, usually characterized as "good sleeping weather," it is all a perfect time to test out that new winter sleeping system too. In many areas, autumn brings snow and rather wintery weather too.

8: Rut Season
In the fall, ruminants like elk and deer enter the rut or mating season. It is at this time that you'll find antler rubs etched onto trees and strange scrapes making a buck's territory. If you are really lucky, you might just see two antlered foes battle each other for dominance.

9: Halloween and Thanksgiving
With both Halloween and Thanksgiving, Fall has some pretty awesome holiday observances. These two celebrations are perfect for getting out with family and friends and exploring the outdoors. Will you don an outdoor-themed Halloween costume for a party? Admit it, you always wanted to dress up like Sir Edmund Hillary. With Thanksgiving, this is also the perfect time of year to find what you are thankful for in your life.

10: Did We Mention Leaves?
Fall is all about the leaves after all. We rejoice in the spring when they emerge and we get downright giddy when we rake a huge pile of leaves and jump into them. Whether you are four or forty, no one can resist a leaf pile.
